Unspeakable Projects is pleased to announce the opening of South of Heaven, a solo exhibition of paintings by Andie Mazorol. Twelve snakes, a magician and a cowgirl populate the series which refigures old characters from Christian theology in new and suspect animal forms. Each painting takes its title from an apostle or maybe apostate: The Evangelist, The Zealot, The Tax Collector. Snakes or disciples? You decide.
Andie Mazorol is one half of painting duo AMTK, winners of the New American Paintings juried competition for the midwest region. They are recipients of the MCAD Fellowship and are represented in a range of institutional collections including the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, The Plains Art Museum and the Weisman Art Museum. Mazorol’s solo practice extends the fringe figures and creative erasures of AMTK’s collaborative practice into new works. This is his first solo exhibition in New York City.
